“We gave them a prayer room. Isn’t that enough?” “My faith states that I can’t shake our clients’ hands.”
“Religion has no right to be in the workplace.”
“I cannot travel for work on the Sabbath.”
Companies today are now being faced with new challenges in accommodating their employees’ need to integrate faith into the workplace and to have more spiritually enriched lives. Changing demographics and the visibility of new diverse faith traditions are driving the imperative for companies to dramatically reshape organizational culture and workplace policies to meet these needs. While some companies are reticent about treading these waters, other companies have met the challenge and have created opportunities for their employees to openly worship at work.
Faith in the workplace is about more than prayer rooms, flexible holidays and affinity groups; it is about valuing and celebrating religious and spiritual diversity in everyday corporate culture. Workers increasingly are revealing their faith while on the job, making religion a crucial part of their professional identity. Faith and work are intersecting in ways that increasingly impact the corporate bottom line. Employees are seeking companies that will make accommodations for their religious practices. This leads to greater employee satisfaction and higher retention rates. Customers prefer to purchase from companies who demonstrate business practices consistent with customer ethical and religious beliefs. Many companies grasp religious pluralism and tolerance as part of being inclusive employers. Other employers continue to ask workers to leave their religious beliefs in the parking lot. Faith at work is no longer a trend, but an aspect of diversity that has worked its way onto the top agendas of corporate leadership. Companies that fail to create strategies to manage faith in the workplace will find themselves losing talent, customers, and reputation.
