Early retirement is a 30 year trend that is reversing direction. The retirement age in most advanced economies will slowly rise over the next 20 years. Older workers will seek flexible work arrangements, phased retirement, and to stay in the workforce as long as is viable. Companies are facing increasing competition for older knowledge workers, whose value is increasing globally. Today's workplace has an unprecedented range of generations working together. The unique needs of the Seniors, the Baby Boomers, and Generation X and Generation Y are challenging traditional work arrangements, benefits, and management techniques. To effectively manage today's diverse workforce, companies must take a close look at the belief systems and expectations of each generation. Senior workers provide a competitive advantage because the knowledge, relationships, and experience they retain can be shared and transferred to younger employees. Developing and training older workers is critical, especially with new advances in technology and constantly evolving job requirements.
