A.  Emerging Leaders: Developing and Sustaining an Energized Membership

In a work environment where there are increasing workloads and decreasing resources, it may prove challenging to develop and sustain an energized body of members for your ERG. Finding ways to tap into the often unspoken need associates have for increased engagement, however, is not a question of necessity, but one of strategy. Gain insights on specific actions you can take, such as the 360 membership strategy, to develop a sustainable blueprint of ENG engagement. Learn how the structure of your ERG might inform levels of participation and how to develop effective guidelines/mission/vision catered to ERG members. Find out how an ERG leader rallies a leadership team and membership given a sensitive diversity dimension such as religion.

Moderator:
Jennifer Collison / Development and Diversity Analyst / United Stationers

Presenters:
Samir Shaikh / Scientist / Merck & Co., Inc
Jorge A. Quezada / Director of Diversity / Allstate Insurance Co.

B.  Program Managers: Assessing ERG Performance Using the 4C ERG Model, Metrics & Benchmarking
One of the most important and difficult tasks for leaders is proving that their ERG brings concrete value to the company. Leaders want to show how the network has positively impacted business goals and be able to reflect upon strengths and weaknesses internally. Especially during this rough economic period with cutbacks across the board, it is important that network groups assess their progress as it is essential in securing resources to truly make a lasting impact. The 4C ERG Assessment Model will be introduced as a way for experienced leaders to measure the success of their networks, assess their performance and communicate their value to company executives. Case studies from companies will showcase why ERGs must first assess their performance in order to accurately measure their success to then effectively communicate the results to show its value.

Facilitator:
Robert Rodriguez, Ph.D. / Senior Vice President / ALPFA

C.   Experienced Leaders: Solving Business Problems Through Creative Partnerships

Bringing business value often involves creating mutually-beneficial, multi-stakeholder partnerships, both with internal partners (other network/affinity groups, business units, corporate functions) and external organizations (conferences, community groups/non-profits, academic institutions). Learn from two innovators who answer pressing business needs—one by expanding their NYLPride affinity group via broadcasting events to numerous remote locations throughout the country and the other by partnering their Black Googlers Network (BNG) with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to deepen community impact and increase brand equity.

Facilitator:

Nadine Vogel / President / Springboard Consulting, LLC

 Presenters:

Joan McKinnon / Assistant Vice President / New York Life Insurance Company

LaFawn Bailey / Diversity & Inclusion Programs Manager / Google

D.   Burning Issues Forum: Getting Middle Manager Support

Middle managers are often cited as the major barrier to employees fully embracing ERGs. Executives in the organization usually promote ERGs and employees indicate that they would participate more, "if only their supervisor got it" and supported "their participation.” Managers, pressured to deliver results, feel they get no recognition for the support they do give, and complain, “it’s never enough.” How do you resolve this dilemma? How do you create win-wins? Please join this facilitated discussion to help identify strategies and solutions.

Facilitator:

Vanessa J. Weaver-Coleman, Ph.D./ CEO / Alignment Strategies, Inc.

11:30 - 11:45            Transition Break

11:45am - 1:00pm   Round I Repeated

1:00 – 2:15              “Great Ideas” Networking Luncheon: Making Great Partnerships Work (By Affinity Groups)
ERG contributions can create sustainable connections by addressing community needs. In this session, attendees will sit with like affinity group members to share great ideas around creating and maintaining community partnerships. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable insight on how to build strong relationships in the community.

 2:15 - 3:30              Round II:  Leadership Development

A.  Emerging Leaders: Branding Your ERG Inside and Out

You want your company and your constituency to understand your network and its potential value. Successful ERGs understand that their group has to build its own brand so that it has an identity, has values that are aligned to the corporate mission and is recognizable among all the other internal groups that are vying for management’s attention and budget. Discussion will include the value and rewards of peer to peer competition and how one company has operated successful companywide Case Challenges. Learn how to leverage your brand externally, how to benefit internally and how these companies have branded their groups to be valuable resources for developing business in new ways.

Facilitator:

Rita Johnson / Vice President / Global Women’s Leadership Forum

Presenters:

Stephanie Harper / Second Vice President, Client Online Product Marketing Manager / The Northern Trust Company

Shaela Lawson / Director, Employee Network Groups / Sodexo

Consuelo Rodriguez / Global Diversity & Inclusion Strategist / Dell, Inc

B.  Program Managers: Leveraging Relationships with Executive Sponsors

Executive Sponsors serve as a critical resource for the formation, growth and institutionalization of employee resource groups. Sponsors can serve as coaches for ERG leaders, bring inside business knowledge to help ERGs contribute to the business and champion ERG activities to the rest of the leadership team. Most organizations provide support to executive sponsors to help them fulfill these roles. Learn how one company engages senior leaders who volunteer versus being ‘volun-told’ to be a sponsor and what strategies turn executives into advocates. Find out how another company gains leadership support for their Women’s Initiative to help reach their goal of hiring 50% female employees. Join the discussion on how to select the right executive sponsor for your ERG, build a strong relationship and leverage it to grow your ERG.

Facilitator:

Melissa Donaldson / Director, Inclusion Practices / CDW

Presenters:

Patricia "Tricia" McClung / Vice President of Strategic Offerings, Single Family Division / Freddie Mac

High potential leaders know that ERGs can provide them important executive development opportunities to stretch and take on roles and responsibilities that might not normally be available. By using ERG leadership opportunities to increase motivation and skills, many companies are able to engage the best talent and develop a diverse leadership pipeline. Being provided with exposure to senior leaders that otherwise would not be possible fosters growth, development and advancement. Learn how a series of monthly teleseminars and panel presentations hosted by ERG members focuses on leadership skills, personal branding and business savvy; a member learning circle provides a 9-month mutual mentoring program; and a women’s resource council provides development and networking opportunities for more than 2100 members across the US.

Presenters:

Mandy McDonald / Senior Manager, International OD / Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

As part of Diversity Best Practices’ commitment to diversity thought leadership, and in recognition of personal complexity, we have launched Inclusion Intersections, an ongoing series examining the multidimensional identities that make us all unique. Today’s luncheon will feature our guest speaker who represent these multidimensional identities and provide us with insights, challenges and a call to action for your AG/ENG/ERG…no matter what its identity.
