Powerful Gay & Lesbian CEOs

The number of companies promoting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality in the workplace has grown tremendously in the past decade. A look at the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index illustrates this development. In 2002, the first year of the index, just 13 companies received a top score. In the latest survey, 190 companies earned 100 percent.

Yet, despite this increased commitment to LGBT equality, many employees remain uncomfortable with being open about their sexuality at work. In fact, a study of 2,952 LGBT workers by the Center for Talent Innovation found that almost half (48%) were not out at work. With a majority of professionals choosing to remain in the closet, there’s a dearth of LGBT senior executive role models.

As Diversity Best Practices recognizes Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month, we’re shining a spotlight on LGBT CEOs. Read on to learn about seven who are succeeding and shaping the business world.
