2010: A Mixed Bag for Diversity

by: Michael Collins, Research and Publications Analyst, Diversity Best Practices

Despite an increasing number of women and racial minorities on television and the crowning of the first Muslim-American Miss America, 2010 proved to be a difficult year for diversity, opines Kavitha Rajagopalan in a column in Newsday.

In the political sphere, the number of women in Congress will decrease for the first time in 32 years, following the 2010 midterm elections. While three states elected female governors in 2010, immigrants’ rights continued to come under fire. The defeat of the DREAM Act, a spike in the number of undocumented citizens being deported and rising anti-Islamic sentiments are all key set backs for diversity and inclusion, writes Rajagopalan.
