President Barack Obama, actress Halle Berry, baseball great Derek Jeter and broadcast journalist Soledad O’Brien all represent a new shift in diversity predicted by U.S. Census Bureau director Robert Groves, according to the Telegram & Gazette. In only the second time respondents were allowed to identify as more than one race, Groves anticipates that the 2010 Census will reveal an increased number of Americans who identify as multiracial.
The U.S. population grew 9.7 percent to reach 308,745,538 in 2010. Fastest gains were based in the South and West. While Hispanics continue to drive the nation’s growth, the population increase was the weakest in seven decades, as the worst recession since the Great Depression slowed immigration.
