June 1 marks the start of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, established to acknowledge the contributions of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. The month of June was chosen to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York’s Greenwich Village, which launched the modern LGBT liberation movement in the United States. The last Sunday of the month is Gay Pride Day.
